From July 13th to 22nd, 96 undergraduates from the School of Life Sciences in 2018 and 2019, under the leadership of professional teachers and class sponsors, went to the Xunyangba Qinling Field Practice Base of Ningdong Forestry Bureau of Ningshan County for a 10-day life Scientific cognition practice, which was the first biological field teaching activity since the establishment of the institute.
Before the internship, the college organized the Qinling Field Cognitive Internship Mobilization Meeting and the Safety Education Conference. The meeting emphasized that all teachers and students must first ensure safety, and all students should establish a sense of discipline, cultivate a spirit of hard work, unite and help each other, and comprehensively improve their comprehensive ability. Based on the previous internship experience, the leading teachers introduced the specific situation of Xunyangba from the perspective of professional knowledge, so that the students had a better understanding of the location and process of the internship.
On July 14, the leading teachers of animal and botany gave a systematic and detailed lecture on the content of the internship, so that the students have a preliminary understanding of the samples that might be collected during the internship and some basics identification basis.
During the internship, 8 to 10 people were organized in groups, and the internship activities were carried out in groups. The students soon learned the division of labor and the use of internship equipment. Due to the weather, the students braved drizzle many times to collect animal and plant materials under different topographical conditions, and then made and processed animal and plant specimens in the laboratory for identification. During the plant internship, the students got to know many beautiful plants that are hard to see in daily life, such as evening primrose, leaf bead, pearl vegetables, etc. Students in the animal group need to get up early in the morning to watch birds, observed a variety of protected birds, such as red-tailed water robin, northern red-tailed robin, yellow wagtail, etc. During the day, monopharynx, pinus, naismus, and various insects of Coleoptera, Geptera and Diptera were caught on the mountain.
From the experience written by the students, it can be seen that this internship not only brings the students' understanding and knowledge of the theory to a higher level, but also makes the students feel that they are being pulled back to nature again and appreciate the charm of nature. Aware of the urgency of environmental protection in Qinling. Through this internship, the students’ sense of identification with the biotechnology major was enhanced, and many students became insect mysteries and plant mysteries. It has cultivated the students’ hard-working spirit, teamwork ability, communication ability and independent learning and practice ability, which provides support for the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents in biotechnology.
